Brickwork with crumbling render and loose mortar joints

Before

A row of red brick cottages with neat new pointing

After

The brief

Four neighbours in a row of 1850s cottages had damp patches on their front walls. Someone had repointed them in hard cement years ago, and the bricks were starting to crumble around it.

What we did

We scaffolded the whole row, raked out the cement by hand, replaced about sixty spalled bricks with reclaimed ones that matched, and repointed in a natural hydraulic lime mortar. The neighbours split the scaffold cost four ways.

How it went

Three weeks in dry weather. The walls had dried out by the following winter, and two of the neighbours have since booked us to do the backs.
